Women of the World

Cardiff based artist Helen Bur was commissioned in 2016 to paint a very large wall at the heart of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

The mural was created for the Women of the World festival which celebrates the achievements of women from across the world and looks at the obstacles that may stop women and girls from achieving their potential.

Helen handily conjured up a few early sketches and posted them on her Instagram feed (it’s well worth a follow!)

What an amazing addition to the arts centre and what an impact it has had – must’ve taken a lot of girl power to complete this masterpiece.

Painting at height on a scissor lift Helen has carefully crafted four women hard at work whilst another adjusts a man’s cap.

Throughout the work each sex is stereotyped doing various things like the men painting or the women carrying their hats!

Helen has named the work ‘Thinking Caps / Scratching the Surface’ and has signed the work with her initials in one corner.
