Taking part in the Back to Nature Paint Jam event was a whole host of artists from Cardiff and from around the UK including Bristol, London and the South Coast.
Whom all turned up to paint in the shadows of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff city centre on a bright but chilly Spring day.
The idea behind the paint jam was to celebrate International Women’s Day by featuring an array of female street art talent painting along the themes of Women or Nature.
This included the impressive line up of Unity, Pyklops, Bizzy, Kitkat and 1Stop to name a few of the ladies that turned up but also one name to single out was Vanesa Longchamp who also made the journey to the capital to paint for the event.
Vanesa’s work is quite striking in it’s bold style which often features a female face entwined with flowing locks of hair; she describes her style on her website as:-
The introvert, graceful female characters always face inwards, safely cocooned inside their winding locks of long hair. Born from a personal process of catharsis, they express emotional healing and balance. Her signature characters bring calmness to the space, creating beautiful worlds of silence.
The artist arrived on Saturday morning and began by outlining the structure of the female character, then filling in the face then adding the flowing locks of hair for her part of the 340 foot wall.
As the piece developed throughout the day she added other embellishments around the perimeter to help frame her work and then filled in the hair in a strong purple colour.
Using two tones of the same colour and utilising some transparent black the 3d effect of the hair was really beginning to take shape. (Thanks Fanakapan!)
Returning to complete the piece on the second day Vanesa filled in the remaining parts of the wall with black before running out! Just where did all that black go?
A hastily arranged trip to WH Smith and the arrival of Kitkat meant she could complete the piece fighting the cold and the numerous trips to the toilets.
Who says you should LOOK great? Just do what you love and be yourself and you will FEEL great. That is all it takes… Today is your day like any other day. It was great to see this piece develop over the weekend and watch all the hard work that went into this striking work.
Just a shame that it only lasted a few days before some other work replaced it!
